DUNTROON

Designed to meld into its forested surrounds and offer sweeping views of the valley below, this contemporary home sits atop the escarpment in rural Ontario. The clients were looking for a retreat for family and friends, a place to escape the city to entertain, relax and enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle.

Inside, a void over the staircase features windows with views across the valley and an abundance of natural light. To the right, a passage adorned with vintage Turkish rugs takes you into the great room where a dramatic, 17-foot high, concrete-paneled, wood burning fireplace takes centre stage. A cathedral ceiling clad in birch plywood envelopes the room like a cocoon. The open-concept space features a collection of Nordic pendant lights, matte finishes, curved and fluted details that soften and elevate the room.

Throughout the home, terrazzo, concrete aggregate and graphic tile add texture and drama, while vertical lines in paneling and staircase balusters accentuate height and juxtapose against curved elements. Black windows frame the views outside, while dark accents offer contrast and balance to the fresh white palette.
